If you don't have access to the FTP servers then ask someone who has (a moderator for example). I been doing a bit of digging round and autodesk no long appear to have the service pack or any updates around. From what i heard 4.0 is a pain without these updates, i believe even a performance pack is around that would be useful if anyone still got it. The name of this file is '3dsmax_42_update.exe', which upgrades from 4.0 to 4.2. EDIT: I was rifling through my hodgepodge files, and discovered another update about which I had forgotten, '3dsmax_42_PerfPack_I05'. This was a BETA update from Autodesk/discreet for those with P4 CPU's, and designed to address performance issues (YMMV).

I believe last update was 4.26 Not quite.there were four 'as-is' updates (meaning if they went bonkers, discreet/Autodesk was less than sympathetic) released by discreet: '3dsmax429patch1.zip' '3dsmax429patch2.zip' '3dsmax429patch3.zip' '3dsmax429patch4.zip' The update to which you refer is '3dsmax42-SP1.exe'; this will upgrade 4.2 to either 4.25 if you have an AMD CPU, or 4.26 if a Pentium III/4 CPU is present, and reflected via splash screen upon successful update. 3D studio max 4 was/is plagued with glitches (particularly within Character Studio's biped animation), yet quite a few game companies released official (kneecapped) file format exporters. Speaking of export, for CS 3.2, there was a at-no-cost-to-you update named 'cs321aupdate.exe' released, which also addressed some animation export glitches. EDIT: Apologies! I forgot to also mention: 'maxsdk_42.zip' '3dsmax_42_help.zip' 'maxscript_42_help.zip' '3dsmax_42_tutorial_help_and_files.zip', as well. These updates for 4.0 --> 4.2 do Exactly What It Says on the Tin. Also, if these files are needed and you are unable to find them, PM me please.

That's an expensive loss. Well, yes and no, to answer your question.

When Max 4.2 was released there were/are two options: install CS 2.2 or 3.2 (included in the box was a copy of CS 3.0, which is the stand alone upgrade for 3D Studio R3.1 - that's the one of mine that broke and have since located an OEM replacement. EDIT The file for Max 4 --> 4.2, '3dsmax_42_update.exe', contains CS 3.2. For Max 5.1, the install option were/are: CS 3.4 and CS 4.0 (to use CS 4.0 req.

Purchase after pressing 'biped'). The secondary disc simply has all the extra tutorial media for CS 3.4. The reason for 3.4 was to allow continuity for Max 4.2 users with a registered copy of 3.2 (you had to buy it to use 'biped' CS in Max 4), but with updates already in the plugin.

The CS 4.0 plugin is stuck inside one of the.CAB files on the Max 5.1 install disk as there is no stand alone disc *; if I extract the discreet.err, discrete, install files, it should work (but you'll have to register it, unless you have a copy of Max 4.2 with 3.2 registered, then install Max 5 with CS 4.0 and it *should* bypass registration for 4.0 - you can run both Max 4.2/4.25 & 4.26 and Max 5/5.1 on the same machine). EDIT * The file for Max 5 --> 5.1, '3dsmax_51_Update.exe', does not contain CS 4.0. CS 4.0 was released as a stand alone disc mostly for Uni's and select retail and *extremely* difficult to find, since the 5.1 bundle was released shortly after for retail customers who had not yet purchased Max 5 proper. There was also an upgrade for CS 4.0 --> CS 4.1, named 'character_studio41.exe', that, AFAIK, was DLC only, and true to Autodesk/discreet form, required purchase to register. It is also strongly suggested that one upgrade max 5 --> 5.1 via '3dsmax_51_Update.exe', and then install '3dsmax51SP1.exe', in order to get the full benefit of CS 4.1, even if one has a stand alone CS 4.0 disc for Max 5.
