We are situated in the main school building and our department consists of five spacious, well-maintained teaching suites. Our aim is to provide all students with a challenging and enjoyable mathematics curriculum through employing a variety of teaching and learning strategies in a supportive and motivating environment. We are a very active department involved in a number of out of hours programmes such as, Masterclasses for GCSE and Grade Booster Classes. We understand that many students feel that Maths is ‘not for them’ but we believe that Maths is for everyone. We provide support and encouragement to enable students to engage with, explore, enjoy and succeed in Maths.

We love Maths; it is diverse, engaging and essential in equipping students with the right skills to reach their future destination, whatever that may be. It is our belief that the learning and development of each student is through a partnership between parents, teachers and students, and we would like to reassure parents that they can feel free to contact us at any time. The Mathematics Curriculum Key Stage 4 (Year 9, 10 and 11) There have been many recent changes to the GCSE curriculum in Mathematics and there is a significant increase in content. For this reason our students are enrolled on a three year GCSE course commencing in year 9. We will be following the AQA scheme of work for the 8300 exam which pupils will sit at the end of Year 11. There are two tiers – Foundation where the highest grade achievable is a Grade 5 (equivalent to a high grade C) and Higher where pupils can achieve up to a grade 9.

A decision is made for each pupil to determine which is the best paper and exam for them to sit. We welcome parents input into this decision and will always do what we think is best for our students. Students are assessed on a regular basis throughout the three years and are given individual feedback on what topics they need to focus on in order to improve. There are regular revision and booster classes for Year 11 in the run up to the GCSE and intervention classes are provided for those students identified as needing help to reach their potential.
